Welcome to DURPS

Hello and welcome to the DURPS (Dundee University Role Playing Society) website. As you have probably guessed from our name (and our hosting on the University server) we are a role playing society based at Dundee University in “not-so-sunny” Scotland.

Meetings: We meet for tabletop games on Monday & Thursday nights at 7pm in the meeting rooms on Floor 4 of DUSA. (please see the forum for details of the games run on each night – if you aren’t registered please see this post for details of how to do so). We also run a fantasy LARP (live action role play) and details of the next event can be found on the LARP page. We also have a Facebook page which can be found here.

Other Events: Over the course of the year we run other gaming and social events. These include themed pub crawls, an overnight horror LARP on Halloween, and organising trips to the Student National Role Playing & Wargaming Competition and some of the larger LARP festivals.

So what is role playing? In its simplest form role playing is a game where you take on the role of another individual and act out their story, the thing we did without realising  as kids when we played games like “cops & robbers” – but with the benefit of some sort of rules to avoid the “I shot you!” “No you didn’t” arguments we can all remember. Some people describe it like group story telling, where each player is responsible for the actions of a specific character, while the GM (games master) is responsible for setting and the actions of everyone else in the game world apart from the PCs (Player’s Characters). Acting skills are helpful in portraying your character but not overly demanded and to be honest even the best of us fall more into the realms of Golden Raspberry awards rather than Oscars. But no matter how role playing is described the key point is that it’s a game we play for our own fun and entertainment.
